Tony Nys
Java Competence Leader

What is your current role?
I am currently a Java Architect & Competence Leader. I joined Capgemini in 2005. After many years of software design, development and architecture, I was looking for a new challenge. I still embrace the technical Java domain, but I needed something extra to extend my hard and soft skills. Capgemini allows me to broaden my horizon and to extend my network.

What kind of projects have you been doing so far?
Before I joined Capgemini, I worked for many years in the EAI/B2B area: electronic invoicing, E-ID, security, etc…My last couple of projects at the European Commission and ING were challenging and diverse: one involved building a vast auditing application, while the other set to redesign an existing front-office application. Also, Capgemini allows me to further develop its Java community locally and internationally. Capgemini is a strong distributed delivery player, working onshore and offshore. It’s what we call our Rightshore™ approach. As an analyst and designer I have spent some time in Mumbai, to help our Indian colleagues.

How would you sell Capgemini to future colleagues?
I tell them that Capgemini allows you to expand your knowledge in different domains. There are many opportunities and it is up to you to use them. Capgemini has all the necessary support at hand. You are the master of your own destiny.

What about the learning opportunities?
There is just too much too learn, from soft skills to hard skills, from web-based trainings to class room trainings… As I said, you define your own training path.

How do you feel about your work/life balance?
Your work and private life should be in balance to allow you to function optimally. Having built a house this year and having many responsibilities at the client and within Capgemini, it is not always easy. The good spirit of my colleagues helps me to cope.

What does the future look like for the worldwide Java community?
The Java community should assess what we currently have, and maybe try to improve and merge currently available technologies or frameworks.

What are you passionate about in your private life?
I love to travel and I am a real mountainbike freak. I climbed the Mont Ventoux, the Etna in Sicily, the Teide in Tenerife, …
