Environment

At Capgemini Belgium today, we have built our CSR strategy around two pillars: environment and charity.

ISO 14001

At the end of 2010, Capgemini Belgium received its ISO14001 certification from SGS. Customers, consumers, and shareholders are increasingly concerned over the environmental impact of the activities, products, and services they consume. They expect companies to comply with environmental standards and demonstrate their commitment to reducing their environmental impacts in daily operations. That may be a challenge, but it is also an opportunity for us to demonstrate our environmental responsibility, stand out from the competition and show existing and potential customers the proof of your commitment.

The benefits of this certification are:

  • Managing environmental aspects effectively
  • Improved compliance with environmental legislation
  • Prevention of pollution
  • Minimizing energy and resource usage reducing operating costs
  • Continual improvement in environmental performance
  • Reducing the risk of penalties and avoids litigation
  • Increased stakeholder confidence
  • Improving employee morale
  • New business opportunities with environmentally aware customers
  • Demonstrate high levels of environmental compliance when bidding for international contracts/ expanding locally to accommodate business In order to keep this certification, a communication plan was rolled out on different topics, such as
  • Teleworking: each employee was given the right tools to start teleworking effectively from outside the company offices. In 2011, a teleworking-policy was created, and e-learning courses were made available for all employees.
  • Fleet: a new Fleet policy ensured the reduction of CO2-emission of the Capgemini Belgium company car fleet.
  • Building: starting in 2011, our Diegem offices will be completely redesigned into an “open space” structure, without personal offices. To ensure the smoothness of this transformation, a change manager was appointed.

To increase awareness of our Sales and Delivery people on the ISO 14001 certification and the environmental topics in general, a kit was created (including this CSR document), and we are also organizing internal training sessions on this topic. We also spread the word of the ISO 14001 certification and advise other companies to get certified, too. For example, together with SGS, Capgemini Belgium presented the certification and the planning to 3C (Corporate Communications Community).

Other initiatives: raising awareness.

To increase the environmental awareness of its employees, Capgemini creates lots of buzz around different “eco” events:

  • Earth Day: held every year on April 22 to create greater awareness around, environmental issues and our responsibility to help build a greener future. Our Financial Services Global Business Unit (FS GBU) carries out different initiatives. Across all FS GBU locations, reusable Capgemini cloth bags declaring “Say NO to Plastic,” and “Be the Change” were distributed to raise awareness and encourage each of us to do our part every day to be more environmentally conscious.
  • Green week and no travel week: the Capgemini Group at large celebrates UN Environment Day (June 5) with a two week focus − from Monday May 30 to Friday June 10 − on the environment, and on Capgemini’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Numerous entities across the Group mobilize around this focus to demonstrate how we work with clients, partners, and suppliers to contribute to a greener future. The week before the UN Environment Day will be the “No Travel” week, in which our employees are asked to avoid all travel by plane or train. The week after the UN Environment Day, Capgemini launches the “Green” week, during which we have different initiatives, like:
    • Encouraging employees to come to the office by bike
    • Asking employees to sign a charter in which they to promise to start ecodriving, in order to save up on our CO2 output, and reduce our carbon footprint
    • Creating a “Green-account”, where employees can deposit money. At the end of the Green Week, Capgemini Belgium doubles this amount, and donates it to an environmental cause that supports biodiversity in Belgium
    • Organizing an “eco” booth, where colleagues can discover ecofriendly products
    • Asking employees not to use the elevators, dim the lights in the office, check the tire tension of their car, avoid going to a carwash, avoid taking unnecessary printouts, and also make other suggestions to help save the environment.
